Simon Fraser University’s School of Resource and Environmental Management graduate course: Introduction to Forestry

mage

In April 2009, HGHES facilitated a 3-week field graduate course for students in Simon Fraser University’s Master’s in Resource and Environmental Management program. HGHES worked closely with the course instructor, Ken Lertzman, to adapt his curriculum to incorporate local content and context, including over 30 local speakers.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive from both the students and the Haida Gwaii community. Many students commented that this was the best learning experience they had ever had. Students appreciated having direct access to local experts, as well as the opportunity to learn about resource management in a resource-dependent community facing all of the challenges of economic diversification, First Nations negotiations, community planning, and natural resource policy. They also appreciated experiencing firsthand the use and value of natural resources to the Haida people through interactions with Haida carvers, traditional food gatherers, Haida archeologists and the President of the Council of the Haida Nation.

Student Testimonials:

“The breadth of content and opinions made for an excellent overall learning experience. Being in the field with one or two experts at a time allowed for open and honest discussions.”

“I was overwhelmed by the quality of local experts and teachers.”

“Excellent course! All of the days were valuable for different reasons and fit together like a puzzle.”

“In general all the speakers did a great job at presenting and teaching about their areas of expertise.”

“I feel that we had a unique opportunity to get first-hand knowledge from the best.”

“Amazing course! I’ve never learned so much anywhere else. Thank you!”
